Archibald Sandeman

1887 – 1941

Archibald Sandeman was a Glasgow artist who had a high reputation among contemporaries as a watercolourist. He was born in 1887 and married Muriel Boyd Sandeman.

They lived in Lochend Farmhouse in Bearsden. Their daughter Margot was also an artist and studied with Ian Hamilton Finlay and Joan Eardley who were close friends. Sandeman trained in chemistry and worked with the family firm, Sandeman Brothers Ltd, in Bilsland Drive, Maryhill.

The firm specialised in oils, varnishes, soaps and lubricants.Sandeman taught himself to paint and during the 1930s he exhibited at the Bennett Gallery in Glasgow and with the Walker Gallery in London. He and his wife travelled annually throughout the west coast and to Skye.

His paintings are colouful and direct and are executed with care and sensitivity.
